About Meetings

If you think you have a problem with drink you are welcome to attend an AA meeting. Newcomers are especially welcome - meetings are the heart and soul of Alcoholics Anonymous and new members are our life blood. We look forward to seeing you! Together we can do things that would be impossible on our own.

Local Meetings

At the time of writing there are 97 meetings in the Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire & Derbyshire area each week. There are different types of meeting (detailed below), at different times of the day, every day of the week. However most meetings tend to follow a similar formula and the chairperson will explain how things work at the start of the meeting. Another important thing worthy of note is that each meeting is autonomous and so can have themes or different topics. WHat they all have in common though is that their primary purspose is to help us stay sober through Recovery, Unity and Service within the fellowship. What we do suggest is that you try several meetings initially to find the ones that will work for you. Members often delegate a particular meeting their home meeting where they can become involved.

Where To Find

The "Where To Find" is a printed tri-fold card with all the meetings listed for the local area - these are free and copies can be picked up from meetings. These are published regularly to keep members up to date with any changes. A copy of our current WTF is available on-line here:

National Meetings

If you want to find meetings elsewhere in the country the we would like to refer you to the General Service Office GB Web Portal - The official site of AA in Great Britain. Here you will find the complete database for all registered meetings in the UK. At the time of writing there are 4511 meetings listed.

Number of meetings in our database is 105

Some AA terms explained:

  • Open meeting (O) - a meeting open to recovering alcoholics, their partners, families and other visitors. (for example doctors or probation officers wanting to learn about how we work.)
  • Closed meeting (C) - a meeting open only to recovering alcoholics
  • Big Book meeting - a meeting that takes a theme from a reading from the book "Alcoholics Anonymous", known to AA members as "the Big Book".
  • Step meeting - a meeting that uses a reading from AAs 12 step programme as its theme
  • 12 step programme - a 12 stage (or "step") programme that many AA members work in recovery
